About Compress PDF to 1MB

This tool compresses a PDF to under 1 MB for email and most upload forms. It tries the Medium level first and automatically moves to stronger levels until the file fits, then tells you if it could not reach the target.

Under 1MB a ten page scanned document is realistic. If the original is a text PDF made on a computer, it is often already small.

To get such a small file, each page is turned into a compressed image. This is how scanned documents are usually shrunk, but it means text in the new PDF cannot be selected or searched. Keep your original file if you need that.

Your PDF is processed inside your browser and never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to 1 MB?

Choose the PDF and press Compress. The tool tries stronger compression levels one by one until the file is under 1 MB.

Why is my PDF still above 1 MB?

Long or colour heavy documents may not fit. Try removing pages with the Merge and Split tool, or scan in black and white, then compress again.

Will the text still be readable?

Yes, pages stay readable at normal zoom. Text is stored as part of the picture, so it cannot be selected or copied in the compressed file.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The work is done in your browser, so private documents stay on your device.

Are my files safe?

Everything runs inside your browser, so your files stay on your device and are never uploaded.
